Children will explore Manga techniques with artist Rina Kondakova. Rina, who specialises in Manga style figurative art will guide children through the key elements of constructing a Manga image. Participants will also be introduced to key techniques used in the style and will be given an appreciation for the historical development of Manga.

Manga Half Day Workshop

  • Date: Wednesday 21-September, 2022

Children will explore Manga portraiture techniques with artist Rina Kondakova. Rina, who specialises in Manga style figurative art will guide children through the key elements of constructing a Manga image. Participants will also be introduced to key techniques used in the style and will be given an appreciation for the historical development of Manga.

Manga is comics or graphic novels originating from Japan. The most common styles of Manga have become extremely popular among audiences all over the world and we see many children and teens experimenting with this style of art.

Children will be encouraged to explore the making of their own Manga artwork. All sessions will also be supported by artist and MAC teacher Camila Quintero.

Rina Kondakova is well known to regular students as our teacher’s assistant at Melbourne Art Class. She has been training in drawing, painting and portraiture since the age of 14 when she was first instructed by MAC founder Marco Corsini. In 2018, Rina won the Black Swan Youth Portraiture Prize for her age group. A graduate of VCASS, she is now part way through completing a Bachelor of Fine Art degree and completes a steady stream of commissions of her artwork.

Participants will be encouraged to develop a concept or narrative which they will then illustrate. Olivia York, a Melbourne-based artist and illustrator who specialises in watercolour Australiana illustration will then guide students towards developing the concept into a visual composition. Olivia will also direct students as to how to use multiple source images to construct and develop an image.

Children's Japanese Ink Workshop

Award-winning sumi-e (Japanese Ink) artist, Junko Azukawa has been hosting sold out workshops at Melbourne Art Class for over 4 years and we are thrilled for be able to offer these workshops for children from January 2022. Sumi-e is the ancient art of Japanese brush painting. Traditionally, paintings feature subjects from nature, such as flowers and birds.
