This is an introduction to character illustration, gouache and watercolour short course taught by Olivia York, a Melbourne-based artist and illustrator who specialises in watercolour illustration. Over 5 weeks Olivia will introduce students to key foundational techniques for illustration using gouache and watercolour media. Olivia will offer personalised assistance informed by the participants individual illustration goals. Suitable for beginners with a desire to create illustrations or explore their creative side.

An Illustration course by artist and illustrator, Olivia York, focusing on the application of gouache and watercolour.
The course focuses on the development of key foundational techniques for illustration using gouache and watercolour media.
Olivia will take students through the fundamentals of brainstorming characters of their own, sketching characters, character development and character refinement. Suitable for beginners with a desire to create illustrations for their own children’s book or just wanting to explore their creative side. Olivia will take students through the foundations of watercolour and gouache painting to bring their characters to life and bring detail to their background illustration. Students will be supported in exploring facial expressions, gestures and storyboarding to create characters unique to their imaginations.
We welcome all skills levels, from complete beginners, to experienced artists who need a space and dedicated time to create. We maintain small class sizes to ensure Olivia can offer one-on-one tuition for each student.
Olivia York is a Melbourne-based artist and illustrator, with a passion for Australiana. She creates witty and whimsical watercolour animal characters, which have been featured in books, packaging, homewares and even a food truck. Olivia has worked with companies such as Australia Post, House, Lalaland and Nutella to create imaginative answers to creative briefs.
