This course is presented by artist and teacher Olivia York, focusing on the application of gouache and watercolour.

The course focuses on the development of key foundational techniques for illustration using gouache and watercolour media. Students will be introduced to techniques such as colour mixing, laying washes, colour glazing and lifting out, to set the foundation for watercolour painting. Olivia will also discuss the basic materials and equipment of gouache and watercolour such as a selection of basic colours in pans or tubes, brushes, watercolour papers, palettes and accessories.

We maintain small class sizes to ensure Olivia can offer one-on-one tuition, especially for those students who have more experience in watercolour painting and want to explore different techniques and compositions.

Students will create several works experimenting with techniques that are discussed and demonstrated during class and will also be invited to create compositions inspired by landscape, foliage, animals, abstract ideas, or patterns, in a relaxed and collaborative environment.
