MAC welcomes contemporary figurative painter, Saffron Newey to the teaching team. Saffron is presenting a three session portraiture drawing workshop on Tuesday nights at our new Malvern Studio. Saffron will step though the fundamentals of portraiture with participants, moving from cast drawing to self portraiture, to working from a model.
Saffron currently lectures for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at RMIT University and has been awarded a Ph.D in Fine Art. Saffron’s experience as a tutor and lecturer in art education spans 25 years. You can find out more about Saffron at Jan Manton Gallery or here.

This is a technical course and students will be introduced to the following processes of portraiture drawing:

  • Structure of the head
  • Understanding the form of the face, planes, light and shadow
  • Drawing fundamentals
  • Working from life

We welcome complete beginners as well as more experienced artists who want to revisit the fundamentals of portraiture. If you have an interest in portraiture, this course is perfect for you.

Drawing is fundamental to any artistic practice. This short course is designed for people who are looking to learn the fundamentals of observational drawing. Perfect for beginners or those looking for a refresher on drawing fundamentals.

Saffron will take students in school grades 8 to 12 through the fundamentals of drawing the portrait. Saffron will use plaster head busts to demonstrate a structural approach to drawing the face. She will discuss how to accurately structure a face and how to perceive tone, form and colour in the face.
