Sam Leach unveils the time-honoured secrets behind classical underpainting and glazing techniques. In this comprehensive course, you’ll master the art of shaping form, light, and shadow using the classic grisaille method and then progress to the use of glazing to achieve vibrant, luminous colours.

You will be concentrating on the Landscape,  so students are encouraged to bring in a landscape photograph to work from. Or we can print out your digital image in class.

This short course spans 5 Tuesday nights in our inspiring Armadale studio. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, you’re welcome to join us.

These foundational painting techniques have left an indelible mark on the art world for centuries. ‘Foundational Painting: Grisaille to Glazing Landscapes’ offers a unique opportunity to elevate your painting skills to new heights, following in the footsteps of the great masters.

Sam Leach is an Australian contemporary artist born in Adelaide, South Australia and now residing in Melbourne, Victoria. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting), Honours Fine Art (Painting), Master of Arts (Fine Arts) and Doctor of Philosophy (Fine Arts) from RMIT University.  Sam’s works are informed by art history, science, and philosophy.

Learn Drawing Fundamentals
This course combines both formal and informal approaches to drawing. Each week, Camila will guide the class through a unique drawing experience. Participants will work observationally from life in various contexts and settings, including studio-based work and street drawing. The course will emphasise drawing as both a skill and a tool for self-expression, helping participants discover and develop their personal style. Designed as a rolling program, participants will journey with Camila as their guide, exploring a range of drawing techniques and materials.

Melbourne Art Class welcomes leading Australian contemporary abstract artist Samara Adamson-Pinczewski to conduct an introductory course solely dedicated to abstract art practice. This course introduces the key elements and techniques of abstraction and will help beginner students, and artists who would like to revisit the fundamentals.

This is an introduction to watercolour and gouache short course taught by Catalina Leischner, Argentinian artist and Art Conservator who specialises in watercolour illustration. Catalina will introduce students to key foundational techniques for using gouache and watercolour media. Catalina will offer personalised assistance informed by the participants individual illustration goals.
