Back by popular demand! A general and intensive introduction to Floral Design; a great course for beginners.
You will take a flower design home with you each week and learn a new skill each session. You will learn how to construct a round bouquet, front-facing bouquet, a design in a container and more. You will also learn design elements and principles.
This introduction workshop in contemporary floral design is tutored by Carolyn Howells, an experienced floral designer/stylist and qualified Art Therapist. Carolyn is passionate about the benefits available to health and well-being through the practice of art and floral design.
This floral design course integrates a small amount of art therapy (making a card to go with your flowers) and some mindfulness and relaxation techniques. The amount of art therapy and mindfulness depends on the needs of the group, which is determined in the first workshop (around 5 minutes before each session begins).
During the four-week course you will learn:
- Design principles and elements
- Orchid spiral technique in a low vase to take home – Autumn tones
- Front facing design – pastel colours
- Wrapping technique
- Using florist foam
- Colour theory
- Making a gift card
- Relaxation technique

Different techniques and flowers are used each week, and you can take home your beautiful designs. You can see artwork produced in previous classes here.

“I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank Carolyn and the team for a truly wonderful experience in both the introductory and advanced courses.
I have been wanting to do some sort of creative class around flower arranging for a long time, I looked around at CAE courses and other websites, and by a stroke of luck came across these classes with Carolyn, which are something more special.
As a busy professional originally from interstate, it became a real oasis to spend a Saturday afternoon amongst new friends with Carolyn, learning about mindfulness, art therapy and floral design. To get in touch with your creative side and make beautiful arrangements to fill your home, surrounded by lots of inspiration and the lovely surrounds of Enderby studio / Uniting Church Richmond was a wonderful treat for a weekend.
Carolyn is a fantastic teacher, I learnt so much and she made me feel inspired and more confident to follow my heart and my own personal style whilst guiding me in the right direction around principles of design. Her passion for the craft was infectious, it was lovely to see how much she cared about the art of floristry as well as the creative space and connection of human emotion towards that art.
The classes are fun and interactive, as a student you are well looked after and the equipment, flowers and arrangements are beautiful and great value for money. I could go on, but I feel like I also don’t want to let the secret out here in Melbourne!!” – Kristin, 2015
