Our structured, introductory painting course for Term 3 will be taught by artist Hilmi Baskurt. You can read our student feedback below, and click here to read more about Hilmi.

This class is for complete beginners and intermediate painters and will focus on the fundamentals of oil painting. Our small class size allows for one-on-one tuition and you will work closely with Hilmi to produce a finished piece.

We work with Still Life in this course because it provides unparalleled learning opportunities for beginner painters.

Participants in this course are encouraged to develop drawing skills, conceptual understanding and technical proficiency in painting using a classical approach modified for contemporary use.

Over the five weeks, you will cover:

  • The compositional elements of a painting
  • Grisaille (underpainting)
  • Colour mixing
  • Various oil painting techniques.

You will be working on one piece over the five weeks.

Please bring along a canvas of at least 30cm on one side. All other materials will be provided, however you are more than welcome to work with your own brushes and oil paints.

Feedback about Hilmi’s Painting Classes:

You can read Ivana’s extensive feedback in a blog post we published here

The course was very well structured and time managed. Hilmi provided interesting information on oil painting, quality of paints and medium, and colour theory and colour mixing. Most importantly Hilmi demonstrated the techniques he was teaching so that all students were exposed to the theoretical and the visual components.

The subject matter – apples and pears, although simplistic in their nature provided a challenging subject matter for our compositions.

What I liked best about this class was that Hilmi was able to provide just the right amount of guidance at the right time to help each student with completion of their work.” – Eva, November 2017

“I really loved the course and Hilmi’s teaching.” – Paul, October 2016
