Melbourne Art Class welcomes award-winning sumi-e (Japanese ink) artist, Junko Azukawa to host a three-hour Japanese ink painting workshop.
Sumi-e is the ancient art of Japanese brush painting. Traditionally, paintings feature subjects from nature, such as flowers and birds.
There is much more to creating an image during the process of Japanese ink painting; it is also meditative practise.
The experience of Sumi-e brings a sense of peace and harmony to the artist, and finished artworks are created to arouse the same sense of joy and tranquillity in the viewer.
During this practical course, students will:
- Grind their own ink using stone
- Mix different shades of ink
- Learn how to hold the brush
- Explore painting with an empty mind
- Experiment creating different brushstrokes
- Create traditional images
Junko is an award-winning artist. She has exhibited widely in Japan and Australia, and her work, Bamboo Grove and the dragonfly, is in the permanent collection at the National Gallery of Victoria.
All materials are provided, and the workshop is limited to ten students to ensure one-on-one tuition.
Date: Saturday 20-Oct
Location: Enderby Studio, 314 Church Street, Richmond
Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Materials: All materials included
Cost: $120 incl. GST
“I would definitely recommend this course to others – Definitely, the relaxed friendly atmosphere and Junko’s knowledge. As an introductory course, the content was very good. I also appreciated the tips and advice on technique given. The ink and grindstone were good, and the opportunity to use two types of paper was good, it demonstrated how critical paper choice. This is my second class I have taken at Melbourne Art Class, I will continue to look out for courses. I think the courses you run are great, thanks for doing so.” – Ken, 2018
“Loved it! Can’t wait to come and do another course!” – Victoria, 2018
