Melbourne Art Class welcomes award-winning sumi-e (Japanese Ink) artist, Junko Azukawa to host a five-hour Japanese ink painting workshop.

The upcoming Queen’s Birthday Workshop will also include Japanese Calligraphy at the beginning of the session.

Sumi-e is the ancient art of Japanese brush painting. Traditionally, paintings feature subjects from nature, such as flowers and birds.

There is much more to creating an image during the process of Japanese ink painting; it is also meditative practice.

Junko Azukawa

The experience of Sumi-e brings a sense of peace and harmony to the artist, and finished artworks are created to arouse the same sense of joy and tranquillity in the viewer.

During this practical course, students will:

  • Grind their own ink using stone
  • Mix different shades of ink
  • Learn how to hold the brush
  • Explore painting with an empty mind
  • Experiment creating different brushstrokes
  • Create traditional images

Junko is an award-winning artist. She has exhibited widely in Japan and Australia, and her work, Bamboo Grove and the dragonfly, is in the permanent collection at the National Gallery of Victoria.

All materials are provided, and the workshop is limited to ten students to ensure one-on-one tuition.

Student feedback

“I enjoyed the class and would highly recommend it to people. The time went quickly, content great and the materials are lovely to use. I’m not sure how it could be improved as I enjoyed the class how it was. I liked the space the class was held in and I liked the number of attendees (class not too big).” – Heather, 2019

“It was a very enjoyable afternoon with a very knowledgeable teacher. The small class allowed her to interact with each of us individually.” – Phyllis, 2019

“I enjoyed myself very much. Junko is so relaxed and lovely teacher. She makes it look so easy!! Venue was good and cool.” – Dana, 2019

“I would definitely recommend this course to others – Definitely, the relaxed friendly atmosphere and Junko’s knowledge. As an introductory course, the content was very good.  I also appreciated the tips and advice on technique given.  The ink and grindstone were good, and the opportunity to use two types of paper was good, it demonstrated how critical paper choice. This is my second class I have taken at Melbourne Art Class, I will continue to look out for courses.  I think the courses you run are great, thanks for doing so.” – Ken, 2018

“Loved it! Can’t wait to come and do another course!” – Victoria, 2018

“Overall experience was fantastic! We enjoyed it a lot and Junko showed us lots of interesting tricks too!  Would definitely sign up for another class again. Junko is a very talented artist and most importantly she knows how to teach and demonstrated the technique to the class many times until we fully understood it.  She pays attention to every student equally.” – Grace, 2018
