Saffron Newey, a renowned artist celebrated for her radiant figurative paintings, unveils the time-honoured secrets behind classical underpainting and glazing techniques. In this comprehensive course, you’ll master the art of shaping form, light, and shadow using the classic grisaille method and then progress to the use of glazing to achieve vibrant, luminous colours.
You will be concentrating on the Landscape, so students are encouraged to bring in a landscape photograph to work from. Or we can print out your digital image in class.
This short course spans four Tuesday nights in our inspiring Armadale studio. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, you’re welcome to join us.

Learn Drawing Fundamentals. Each week David will lead the class through a drawing experience. Participants will work observationally from life in various context and settings; from studio based work to street drawing. Designed as a rolling program, participants will journey with David as their guide, trying a range of drawing techniques and materials.

This course introduces the key elements and techniques of abstraction and will help beginner students, and artists who would like to revisit the fundamentals.

Students will be introduced to basic gouache and watercolour illustration techniques including colour mixing, laying washes, colour glazing and lifting out, to set the foundation for watercolour painting. Olivia will also discuss the basic materials and equipment of watercolour such as a selection of basic colours in pans or tubes, brushes, watercolour papers, palettes and accessories.

This is an introduction to watercolour and gouache short course taught by Olivia York, a Melbourne-based artist and illustrator who specialises in watercolour illustration.
Olivia will introduce students to key foundational techniques for using gouache and watercolour media. Olivia will offer personalised assistance informed by the participants individual illustration goals.
