Melbourne Art Class FAQs

Q: How do I find out about the courses I can enroll in?

A: You can find all currently available and upcoming classes on our All Courses page. Courses are listed with clear subject headings, dates, locations, and brief descriptions, so you can easily get an overview. Our Studio Art courses are a staple and run each term. You can see a brief description on the All Courses page, with more detailed information available:

  • For Teens, click here.
  • For Children, click here.

Q: Is Studio Art beginner-friendly?

A: Yes, it is! Studio Art is suitable for all experience levels and offers a more student-led experience compared to our introductory courses. If you prefer less structure or have specific areas you’d like to work on, Studio Art is a great option. You may be surrounded by more experienced artists, which can be very inspiring. Your teacher will work with you one-on-one as needed.

Q: Which classes are good for absolute beginners?

A: All of our Studio Art courses are ideal for beginners and provide a great way to start your artistic journey. If you prefer shorter courses, our Introductory Foundation Art courses are also beginner-friendly and usually run in 2 blocks during school terms! If you’re unsure which course to choose, we often recommend starting with drawing as a foundation. Our Introduction to Drawing Short Course or Drawing Bootcamp Workshop are excellent starting points.

Q: What if I can already draw?

A: If you’re already comfortable with drawing, you might enjoy trying life drawing or exploring other introductory courses. For example, if you’re ready to explore painting, we suggest our Introduction to Painting Short Course. Alternatively, if you’re interested in thinking outside the box, our Introduction to Abstraction Short Course could be a great fit.

Q: I’m a self-taught artist looking to improve my technique. Where should I start?

A: Our Introductory Foundation Art Courses are perfect for refining skills and techniques in areas you wish to develop. The best artists are always learning!

Q: Is Studio Art suitable for practicing artists?

A: Yes, Studio Art is open to artists of all experience levels. It provides a more student-led experience, allowing you to work on your own projects or explore new areas. You may be surrounded by more experienced artists, which can be very inspiring. Your teacher will work with you one-on-one as needed. It’s a great option for artists looking for more space, dedicated studio time, and like-minded peers.

Q: What should I try if I’m more interested in creativity than technique?

A: If you’re drawn to art for its creative and calming aspects, we recommend our Creative Art Therapy and Japanese Ink courses. These courses offer a more mindful and expressive experience.

Q: Do I have to bring my own art supplies?

A: No, we provide all necessary materials for our Foundation and Studio Art courses at no extra cost. However, if you have supplies you’d like to use, you’re welcome to bring them. Occasionally, you may be asked to bring in an item or photo from home; your teacher will let you know if this is required.

Note: Our Masterclasses may require you to provide your own canvas. This will be clearly stated before enrolment.

Q: How many different studio locations does Melbourne Art Class have?

A: We have three studio locations. Be sure to check the course location before booking. More information about each studio, including how to get there by public transport and where to park, can be found here.

Q: What happens if I miss a class?

A: Due to our small class sizes, we cannot offer catch-up classes. However, in some circumstances, we may be able to provide a credit or refund. We recommend reviewing our Terms & Conditions before enrolling.

Q: Where do I sign up?

A: Browse our courses to read more about each one, including dates, prices, and locations. When you’re ready to enroll, scroll down to the “Enroll Now” section on the course page and click “Book”.

Q: My child is in Grade 2. Can I enroll them?

A: Currently, our children’s classes are for students in Grade 3 and up. We’ve found that students are best supported when surrounded by like-minded and similarly-aged peers. We recommend Grade 2 students try our School Holiday Workshops in the second half of the school year, and then join the term classes starting from Grade 3.

Q: Can I book a trial class?

A: For children we recommend trying our School Holiday Workshops as a trial for our term classes. These workshops, which vary each school holiday, are run by the same teachers who lead the term classes and are usually attended by many students who continue in the term classes. It’s a great way to get a feel for Melbourne Art Class before committing to term classes.

For Adults we are happy to discuss this option, please send us an email.

Q: The class I’m interested in says ‘full’. What should I do?

A: Our term classes for adults, teens, and kids run Monday through Saturday during the school term, and we cannot add extra spots once a class is full. We also offer short courses that are repeated at regular intervals. If the class you’re interested in is full, you can check availability for other days or upcoming sessions. If there are no suitable options, you can fill out the register your interest form (at the bottom of each course page), and we will notify you when the next session becomes available.
