Our Studio Art Courses are the foundation of Melbourne Art Class. In these classes you have the freedom to work on your own projects, or our Still Life display with guidance from an experienced teacher and professional artist. During the term, we sometimes have mini-lectures on a particular art movement, genre or technique. We welcome all skills levels, from complete beginners, to experienced artists who need a space and dedicated time to create.

This is an introduction to illustration and mixed media short course taught by Olivia York, a Melbourne-based artist and illustrator who specialises in watercolour illustration. Over 5 weeks Olivia will introduce students to key foundational techniques for illustration using gouache and watercolour media. Olivia will offer personalised assistance informed by the participants individual illustration goals.

You will be introduced to various strategies and techniques for drawing the figure. This course will assist beginner and intermediate artists in developing fundamental drawing techniques.

Sumi-e is the ancient art of Japanese brush painting. Traditionally, paintings feature subjects from nature, such as flowers and birds. Melbourne Art Class welcomes award-winning sumi-e artist, Junko Azukawa to host a three-hour Japanese ink painting workshop.

Melbourne Art Class welcomes award-winning sumi-e (Japanese Ink) artist, Junko Azukawa to host a two-half hour Hanko Seal Carving workshop. Lovers of traditional Japanese art will be familiar with the red stamp or seal often seen on paintings or documents. This seal is used in place of a signature and forms an important part of traditional Japanese culture.

Art Therapy with Jaana Sahling

In this course participants get to take a break from the daily rush to reflect and wind down. Through gently exploring different creative mindfulness exercises and trying different art materials we playfully engage with how we are feeling and what might help us to take care of ourselves in our day to day lives. We use creative processes and art making to focus on the here and now and to get out of the thinking brain and into a more tactile making experience.

Teens Art Therapy with Jaana Sahling

Teenagers will have the opportunity to explore art activities that encourage spontaneity, playfulness and imagination in a safe and inclusive environment.  All activities have a focus on the creative process and freedom of expression instead of an end-product.

Marco will demonstrate live drawing during the course. There will be life models that students will draw from through most of the day. In the middle of the day there will be a lunch break. We welcome complete beginners as well as more experienced artists who want to revisit the fundamentals of portraiture. If you are interested in portraiture, this course is perfect for you. Classes will be restricted to about nine places to ensure one-on-one tuition.
