Leading Australian contemporary abstract artist Samara Adamson-Pinczewski will present this specialist studio based, abstraction short course. During Abstraction: Colour, Shape and Line through Kandinsky and Klee, you will explore how to use the elements of abstraction, colour, shape and line in your abstract art practice.

The work of Wassily Kandinsky demonstrates how colour and line can be used to create rhythm and emotional intensity. Kandinsky believed that colours and forms could affect viewers in much the same way as music. His paintings often feature dynamic combinations of geometric and organic shapes, intersecting lines, and vibrant colours that seem to pulse across the surface. These visual relationships create a sense of movement and atmosphere, encouraging viewers to respond emotionally rather than search for a literal subject.

Similarly, Paul Klee explored abstraction through playful arrangements of colour, shape, and line. Klee’s works often combine simple geometric forms, symbols, and delicate linear structures to create images that feel both ordered and imaginative. His sensitive use of colour establishes mood, while repeated shapes and directional lines generate rhythm and visual flow. By studying the works of Kandinsky and Klee, students can investigate how abstract artists organise visual elements to communicate feeling, movement, and meaning without relying on realistic representation.

Samara will provide a historical and theoretical context as you progress through the sessions.

This is a studio based practice course focusing on abstraction, colour, shape and line in your abstract art practice. A wide range of mediums are available, including drawing and painting in acrylics.

Classes sizes are limited to ensure one-on-one tuition.
