Afternoon workshop, Sunday 2 August
A workshop by artist Anna Parry, introducing watercolour and gouache through painting animals and insects.
The workshop will introduce participants to key techniques for gouache and watercolour painting. As an experienced watercolour teacher, Anna will lead participants through a series of exercises giving the opportunity to explore ways in which an artist creates an artwork.
Watercolour and gouache are both water-based painting mediums made from pigment and a binder, but they differ in appearance and handling. Watercolour is transparent, allowing light to reflect through layers of paint and create luminous washes and subtle colour effects. Gouache is more opaque, producing solid areas of colour with a matte finish.
These mediums are well suited to painting insects and animals. Watercolour can capture delicate details such as wings, fur, feathers, and subtle colour variations, while gouache is useful for adding highlights and sharp details. Together, they allow artists to create detailed and expressive images with a sense of lightness and vitality.
We welcome all skills levels, from complete beginners, to more experienced artists who need a space and dedicated time to create. We maintain small class sizes to ensure Anna can offer one-on-one tuition for each student.
All materials are included. Class places are limited to ensure one-on-one tuition.
Anna is an experienced art educator, having worked in both Primary and Secondary schools. She holds a First Class Honours degree in Fine Art and a Graduate Diploma of Education as well as a Master’s of Fine Art. She is a practising artist specialising in botanical watercolour painting and has been represented in exhibitions such as The Art of Botanical Illustration at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne. Anna also works as a freelance artist and illustrator and has been awarded several prizes and scholarships, including the Galloway Lawson Acquisitive Prize for Painting.
